One-on-One Education Sessions Can Improve Physician Compliance With ICD-10

The degree of success for a facility's ICD-10 transition hinges on the ability of physicians and nurses to comply with new documentation requirements, according to a Search Health IT report.

Compliance with new requirements is essential to make sure claims get paid quickly. According to the report, facility leaders need to understand the importance of training in order to support ICD-10 preparation efforts.

Some experts recommend scheduling physician education during regular one-on-one audits between physicians and coders. In these sessions, coders show physicians the difference between ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes and highlight places where more documentation will be needed.

In this situation, physicians are not being punished for inadequate documentation because the ICD-10 transition has not yet occurred. Physicians also respond better to one-on-one situations where their lack of ICD-10 knowledge is kept private, according to the report.
