NC board may change health insurance for state employees: 5 insights

The North Carolina State Health Plan board of trustees is considering making changes to state employees' options for health insurance, according to WRAL.com.

Here are five insights:

1. Health plan executives have advised trustees to consider getting rid of coverage for spouses.

2. If trustees vote in favor of the recommendations, spouses would likely obtain coverage through the ACA.

3. The proposed changes would not take effect next year, but board members could vote to have their staff work on implementing those changes in 2018.

4. The board is acting under pressure from the state legislature, which seeks savings totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.

5. On Friday, the board is scheduled to vote.
