Missouri Lawmakers Table Discussion of Health Insurance Exchange

Missouri lawmakers have stalled a discussion of the state's health insurance exchange because some senators do not want to implement an exchange system, according to a Public News Service report.

The Affordable Care Act mandates the creation of health insurance exchanges, marketplaces that let individuals and small businesses comparison shop for health insurance online. The healthcare reform law requires states to set up exchanges by 2014 or invite federal intervention.

Defining the details of an exchange is left up to individual states. Some Missouri senators do not want to set up a health insurance exchange because they feel the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional and will be overturned by the Supreme Court anyway, according to the report.

The state Senate Interim Committee on Health Insurance Exchanges will make its recommendation to the legislature by the end of 2011.
