Minnesota Legislators Battle Over Future of Health Insurance Exchange

Competing Minnesota legislators plan to offer opposing suggestions for how health insurance should be sold in the state, according to a Star Tribune report.

Sen. Tony Laurey (DFL-Kerrick) and Rep. Joe Atkins (DFL-Inver Grove Heights) said they plan to offer bills to establish a federally mandated health insurance exchange, which would function as an online marketplace where individuals can comparison shop for health insurance.

Sen. David Hann (R-Eden Prairie) responded that he and others will soon offer bills to limit the power of such an exchange. The governor has appointed a task force of 100 people representing insurance, healthcare, state agencies, advocacy groups, businesses and the Legislature to work on setting up the exchange.

The Republican Party has built its own task force after declining to participate in Gov. Mark Dayton's exchange. The Republican task force includes 20-30 legislators and business leaders and has been working since fall 2011.
