Medical Record Jobs Expected to Increase 20% by 2018

Medical record jobs are expected to increase by 20 percent in the next seven years, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune.

According to the report, more colleges in Wisconsin are offering health information programs, spurred by the demand for staff to assist in medical record keeping and management. According to BLS data, the median salary for medical record personnel is $30,600, with the top 10 percent of employees earning more than $50,000 a year.

The increase in jobs is linked to several factors, according to the BLS. More hospitals, clinics and ambulatory surgery centers are implementing electronic medical records, and providers have monetary incentives to implement EMR. Starting in 2014, providers could face financial penalties if they do not demonstrate meaningful use of an EMR. Medical tests, treatments and procedures are also expected to increase as the baby boomer generation ages.
