At an American Medical Association-sponsored summit in Washington, D.C., healthcare experts discussed revamping the Medicare pay structure, according to American Medical News.
The current payment system, which hinges on the sustainable growth rate formula, is unsustainable and continuously threatens pay cuts to the fee-for-service model, according to the report.
Physicians and industry leaders believe the Medicare SGR formula must be eliminated before meaningful reforms can take place. The AMA has also drafted a framework for transitioning away from the SGR.
Even if the SGR were to be eliminated, many hurdles to payment reforms would exist, including getting physicians and payors on board for coordinated care. At the summit, experts brainstormed improved models, such as bundled payments.
