While the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been ordered to continue processing claims and paying healthcare providers during the government shutdown, a prolonged shutdown period could have disastrous consequences in finalizing the payment rules for next year, according to a Healthcare Finance News report.
Ambulatory surgery centers would see a 0.9 percent increase in reimbursement if the proposed rules are finalized. According to the report, CMS's finalized physician fee schedule and ambulatory surgical center payment system may be delayed, leading to uncertainty about these changes.
The government shut down has also ceased Medicare recertification and initial surveys, though the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services has maintained the CMS fraud and abuse hotline.
