Florida state senators have introduced legislation that would set up a Florida health insurance exchange as required by the federal healthcare reform law, according to a Florida Independent report.
Senate Bill 1640 and House Bill 1423 would provide the intent to establish a health exchange, providing the U.S. Supreme Court does not rule that part of the healthcare reform law unconstitutional.
The federal government recently released a report documenting the progress 28 states have made in creating state health insurance exchanges. The study found that Florida is one of two states that have refused to use a $1 million federal grant to begin planning for an exchange. The state is currently leading the legal challenge to the federal healthcare reform law.
