Jeffrey Brenner, MD, received a $625,000 genius grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to support his work with the Camden (N.J.) Coalition of Healthcare Providers, according to a PBS report.
When analyzing hospital billing data in the city, Dr. Brenner found one percent of Camden patients racking up 30 percent of all hospital costs. His coalition was designed to track these patients — often the poorest — and figure out how to more effectively treat them to reduce readmissions and repeated emergency room visits.
The Camden Coalition gives patients home health visits by nurses and social workers to better treat them while simultaneously reducing the cost of care.
Dr. Brenner received his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.
