CMS to terminate Medicare benefits of Retina Laser Eye Center — 6 insights

CMS will terminate its Medicare provider agreement with Kennewick, Wash.-based Retina Laser Eye Center at 12:01 a.m. Dec. 12.

Here's what you should know:

1. The Washington Department of Health surveyed the center Aug. 1 on CMS' behalf and found the ASC was not in compliance with Medicare participation requirements.
2. The health department inspected the center again Aug. 14, Aug. 27 and Nov. 5, finding the center was still noncompliant.

3. CMS will no longer provide payment for services to Medicare and/or Medicaid beneficiaries treated at the facility after 12:01 a.m. Dec. 12, unless corrective action is taken.

4. Retina Laser Eye Center is the personal practice of Charles Sung, MD.

5. Dr. Sung opened the center in July 1998. Since then, he has treated more than 100,000 patients and performed 10,000-plus surgical procedures.

6. A Retina Laser Eye Center representative said the center will appeal CMS' decision.
