CMS Implements New Policy for Portable Oxygen Equipment

CMS has instructed its contractors to implement new reasonable useful lifetime policy for stationary and portable oxygen equipment, effective May 8, according to an AAPC release.

The policy change applies to instances where a Medicare patient has both portable and stationary oxygen equipment and the RUL for one piece of equipment expires before the other. When this occurs, contractors have been told to shorten or extend the RUL of the portable oxygen equipment (identified by HCPCS Level II codes E0431, E4034, E1392, K0738 and E0433) to match the expiration period of the stationary oxygen equipment (identified by HCPCS Level II codes E0424, E0439, E1390, E1405 and E1406).
