CMS has extended its annual Medicare participation enrollment period through Feb. 14, according to an American Medical News report.
CMS moved the deadline for physicians to continue Medicare participation or withdraw from the program because it anticipates congressional action in the coming weeks to address the 27.4 percent SGR cut to physician rates this year. Congress approved a two-month delay of the SGR cut in late December. The delay will expire on March 1.
If Congress lets the reduction take affect, physicians may chose not to participate in the Medicare program during the 2012 year, according to the report. Medicare contractors will be processing participation status changes that are postmarked by Feb. 14.
