The American Hospital Association's hospitals are supporting a bill to improve the recovery auditor program and other national audit programs, according to Fierce Healthcare.
Among other changes, the bipartisan bill would limit medical record requests, create financial penalties and require medical necessity audits to focus on payment errors.
AHA Executive Vice President Rick Pollack called said "the flood of new auditing programs" are "drowning hospitals with a deluge of redundant audits," unmanageable records requests and payment denials.
The bill's requirement for physicians to review Medicare denials would give much-needed guidance for determining medical necessity, the AHA said.
