AAPC's director of curriculum, Katherine Abel, CPC, CPMA, CEMC, CPC-I, highlighted several "misunderstood modifiers" in the most recent CMA Today, according to an AAPC report.
Ms. Abel discussed the three most commonly misunderstood modifiers: 25, 59 and 22. According to Ms. Abel, modifier 25 indicates a service is a significant, separately identifiable evaluation and management service by the same physician on the same day of the procedure or other service. Ms. Abel says modifier 59 fulfills a similar role as modifier 25 but instead applies to surgical services, while modifier 22 indicates an increased procedural service.
