Here are nine things to know:

1. Since 1965, Medicaid has helped 74 million Americans, with more than 20 percent of Americans currently on Medicaid.

2. Throughout the U.S., Medicaid covers 39 percent of children.

3. The program covers 41 percent of adults aged 18 to 64 with HIV.

4. Medicaid covers 62 percent of nursing home residents.

5. The program pays for 45 percent of births.

6. Of non-disabled Medicaid adults, nearly 60 percent are employed.

7. The program covers 25 percent of all mental health services and 20 percent of all substance abuse treatment.

8. Forty-one percent of Medicaid enrollees have a university degree or some college education while 33 percent have a high school diploma or GED.

9. Twenty-five percent of Americans will receive Medicaid coverage at some time in their lives.
