59.1% of physicians participate in alternative payments: 5 key trends

The American Medical Association's Benchmark Survey examined physician participation in value-based payment models. Here are five things to know from the report:

1. Most physicians — 83.6 percent — still receive fee-for-service payments.

2. More than half — 59.1 percent — report their practices received payment from at least one alternative payment model.

3. Pay-for-performance and bundled payments were the most common alternative payment model, with around 35 percent of physician respondents participating in them.

4. All together, pay-for-performance and capitation accounted for around 7 percent of practice revenue; bundled payments were 9 percent of practice revenue; and shared savings were on average 2 percent of practice revenue. Fee-for-service accounted for 70.8 percent of practice revenue.

5. In the 2014 benchmark survey, alternative payment models were used alongside fee for service.
