3 tips for ICD-10 transition in orthopedics

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released its tool Road to 10, which is designed to prepare physician practices for the impending transition to ICD-10. Here are three tips from the tool specifically tailored for orthopedics practices.

1. The three largest category changes in ICD-10 include definition changes, terminology changes and increased specificity. Increased specificity will be the most important category for ICD-10.

2. More than one-third of the ICD-10 code expansion is due to the addition of laterality. ICD-10 code examples include:

•    M21.722: unequal limb length, left humerus
•    M25.561: pain in right knee
•    M25.562: pain in left knee
•    S72.344A: nondisplaced spiral fracture of right femur shaft, initial encounter for closed fracture

3. Specific parameters to include when documenting factures are:

•    Type
•    Pattern
•    Etiology
•    Encounter of care
•    Healing status, if subsequent encounter
•    Localization
•    Displacement
•    Classification
•    Any complications, whether acute or delayed
