3 essential strategies for handling high-deductible health plans at ASCs

As the number of patients with high-deductible health plans increases, ASCs are making adjustments to accommodate them.

At Becker's ASC Review's 26th annual meeting in Chicago, three panelists discussed how they handle the health plans at their ASCs.

They included:

• Bob Scheller Jr, CEO of Lake Porter Physicians Group in Valparaiso, Ind.
• Cindy Young, administrative director of Surgery Center of Farmington (Mo.
• Sandra Jones, Sandra Jones, founder of Ambulatory Strategies

Three things to know:

1. Increase communication. Collaborating with the patient and their primary care physician to inform the patient about what their portion of the bill will be helps ensure patients are financially prepared prior to surgery.

2. Offer payment options. Paying for surgery out of pocket can be stressful for patients. Offering payment plans can help them shoulder the cost.

3. Train staff. It's important that staff are trained on how to communicate clearly and calmly with patients about their bill.
