A study published in the American Journal of Infection Control following a cohort of healthcare workers during the 2010-2011 influenza season described major barriers to influenza vaccinations among healthcare workers.
Seventy-seven percent of participants received an influenza vaccine. Main reasons why staff didn't get vaccinated included concerns about perceived vaccine effectiveness and a low perception of influenza susceptibility. Half of the unvaccinated study participants said they would have received an influenza vaccine, had it been mandated by their employer.
Those who were vaccinated were more likely to be older, married or partner, working as a physician or dentist, had a history of influenza vaccination, had been in patient care longer had higher job satisfaction.
