The South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners' disciplinary action against medical providers has more than doubled in 2010 compared to 2005-2008, according to a Daily Republic report.
The medical board reportedly disciplined no more than 15 medical providers from 2005-2008. That number jumped to 22 providers in 2009 and 39 providers in 2010, according to the report.
Margaret Hansen, the board's executive director, clarified the increase in disciplinary action does not necessarily mean more providers are engaging in unethical behavior. Varied reasons for the uptick include an increase in licensees in the state and multi-state actions, she said.
