When the National Quality forum recently announced the release of its updated and expanded list of 29 serious reportable events, NQF also announced the serious reportable events no longer just apply to hospitals but now also include ambulatory surgery centers.
The serious reportable events also now apply to skilled nursing facilities and office-based practices, according to an NQF news release.

"The inclusion of three new settings for the serious reportable events represents a significant stride forward in ensuring quality across the continuum of care," said Sally Tyler, MPA, health policy analyst with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and co-chair of the Serious Reportable Events in Healthcare Steering Committee, according to the release. "This updated report and the work that will flow from it should inspire both healthcare consumers and purchasers to be confident that improved outcomes will result."
Serious reportable events are largely preventable errors and events, including wrong-site surgery, patient falls or serious medication errors. Currently, more than half of the states use the NQF-endorsed list of serious reportable events in their public reporting programs.
