The Joint Commission has revised medication management standard MM.02.01.01, element of performance 2, to expand medication selection criteria to include specific populations in hospitals, according to the Dec. 21 Joint Commission Online (pdf).
The change is part of an initiative toward customization, according to The Joint Commission, which is in the process of reviewing standards and survey processes in the hospital accreditation program for specific types of hospitals and patient populations.

The revision is effective July 1, 2012, and will be published in the 2012 Update 2 to the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals.
Revisions to the EP are underlined below:
MM.02.01.01, EP 2: The hospital develops and approves criteria for selecting medications, which, at a minimum, include the following:
- Indications for use
- Effectiveness
- Drug interactions
- Potential for errors and abuse
- Adverse drug events
- Sentinel event advisories
- Population(s) served (for example, pediatrics, geriatrics)
- Other risks
- Costs
