Joint Commission Issues Clarification on Use of Scribes

The Joint Commission has issued clarification on the use of unlicensed professionals who help clinicians enter or navigate information within an electronic health record — also known as scribes.

While The Joint Commission does not specifically endorse or prohibit the use of scribes, the accrediting organization expects healthcare organizations to comply with all standards related to human resources, information management, leadership and rights/responsibilities. Healthcare organizations are also expected to comply with record of care and provision of care standards.
