The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities has released statistics on patient safety in outpatient facilities from analysis of 15 years of AAAASF data on outcomes and procedures for more than 12 million cases. The data show the following:
1. Mortality rate: 1 in 50,000 procedures
Death is mostly due to pulmonary embolism, regardless of whether the procedure was inpatient or outpatient.
2. Intraoperative mortality rate: 1 in 478,000 procedures
Death is most likely related to chronic disease unrelated to the surgical procedure.
4. Infection rate: 1 in 2,400 procedures
No deaths in the dataset were directly linked to infection.
