Delaware Lawmakers Argue Over Authorship of Medical Accreditation Bill

Delaware state congressman Sen. Michael Katz has accused Rep. Bryon Short of plagiarizing a bill that Sen. Katz says he wrote with other medical professionals, according to a WBOC report.

The two bills, which are nearly identical, would force some medical facilities that perform invasive surgery to receive accreditation through the state of Delaware. Sen. Katz says the Delaware Medical Society and the Department of Health and Social Services helped draft the bill, which he alleges Rep. Katz then stole.

Rep. Short sponsored legislation that would have required the inspection of medical facilities earlier in 2011. He pledged to introduce a follow-up to the original bill and now says his May bill is that follow-up.

Sen. Katz said he will urge Senators to vote down Rep. Short's bill because of the "ethical dilemma" surrounding Rep. Short's alleged plagiarism.
