5 Tips for Improving Endoscope Reprocessing

The following are five tips from The Joint Commission on establishing an effective endoscope reprocessing program.

1. Develop good working relationships with all stakeholders in reprocessing, and emphasize the importance of the safety of the process.

2. Visit reprocessing locations during work hours to survey endoscope reprocessing in action, paying close attention to the physician space and ventilation of the area as well as the documentation and training of the staff.

3. Double-check ventilation systems have alarms for airflow monitoring, given staff work with high-level disinfectants.

4. Establish a regular endoscope maintenance process.

5. Be vigilant — a mistake in reprocessing has the potential to occur at any time.
