University of South Florida to Double Tuition for Nurse Anesthesia Program

The University of South Florida wants to charge more than double the usual tuition for its new nurse anesthesia program, according to a Tampa Tribune report.

USF's Board of Trustees approved a plan Friday to set "market-based" tuition for five professional graduate degrees, including nurse anesthesia. The university's goal is to compete with high-cost private and out-of-state university online programs. The university will charge the market rate, making it more expensive than other state universities.

Until recently, state universities could only charge government-approved tuition rates, unless they could prove a degree program would cost more. But Florida Legislature changed the law last year to allow higher charges for specialized continuing education degrees.

In selecting its market-based offerings, the University of South Florida looked at peer institutions and programs that "would have appeal to broader audiences." The university then set its prices in order to compete with those programs.

For example, nurse anesthesia students will pay $57,600 for a 28-month program, compared with the current $36,331 for in-state nurse anesthesia students.
