Dexamethasone effectively reduces postoperative nausea for patients receiving neuraxial morphine for cesarean delivery and hysterectomy, according to a study in the April issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia.
Researchers sought to assess the efficiency of dexamethasone in reducing postoperative nausea, vomiting, pruritus, and enhancing postoperative analgesia in patients receiving neuraxial anesthesia with neuraxial morphine.
The study found that the doses of dexamethasone used for antiemetic prophylaxis enhanced postoperative analgesia, but dexamethasone was not effective for the prophylaxis against neuraxial morphine-induced pruritus.
