SmartTots Asks for Research Proposals on Effects of Pediatric Anesthesia

SmartTots has solicited research proposals aimed at investigating whether anesthetics and sedatives impede the normal development of the human brain, according to a news release.

Recent studies in animals show that prolonged exposure to commonly used anesthetics can cause significant neurodegenerative changes in the central nervous system, resulting in long-lasting behavioral impairments. Funded studies will investigate how these results should impact clinical practice.

The research is essential to understanding whether anesthetic exposure in infants and young children is a cause for concern. So far, the scientific and medical communities have been unable to reach a consensus on the impact of anesthetics on developmental disabilities.

SmartTots will consider studies in any species, providing the studies further the understanding of anesthetic-induced developmental or behavioral consequences in humans.
