An anesthesiologist at the Mayo Clinic has developed an iPad app for patients recovering from heart surgery, according to an ABC News report.
"What the iPad does is allow patients to access their plan of care," says app developer David Cook, MD. "We provide them with knowledge on their heart surgery and what's going to happen each day and what's normal and what's not."
Patients using the app can access educational videos and answer questions about topics including post-operative pain and how much the patient has been able to walk. The information is then immediately transferred to the patient's physician, who has instant access via another iPad.
The app is currently in a pilot program for heart surgery patients older than age 60 at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Cook hopes to expand the app's use to other specialties such as orthopedics and obstetrics.
