Dr. Mike Roizen Presents on Pediatric Anesthesia Neurotoxicity in India

Mike Roizen, MD, chair of the SmartTots executive board, recently traveled to India to present on pediatric anesthesia neurotoxicity, according to a MarketWatch report.

Dr. Roizen highlighted findings from studies conducted by the FDA's National Center for Toxicological Research and several universities. He referenced early rodent and recent monkey data, all of which demonstrate neurotoxicity as the result of anesthetic exposure during early brain development.

Dr. Roizen presented data generated by NCTR's investigations into the rhesus monkey. According to a recent study, a single 24-hour episode of ketamine, administered during a sensitive period of brain development, resulted in long-lasting cognitive deficits in non-human primates.

Dr. Roizen emphasized that animal results are not sufficient evidence to implement changes to clinical practice. He stressed the need for additional studies into the effect of anesthesia on pediatric neurological development.
