In the midst of an anesthetic drug shortage, some physicians are turning to compound pharmacies rather than drug companies for supplies, according to a KTHV report.
Rather than sell manufactured drugs, compounding pharmacies offer prescriptions custom- formulated by pharmacists based on patient needs. The report, based out of Little Rock, Ark., said that compounding pharmacies are becoming increasingly conventional sources for prescriptions among physicians in the state.
Joshua Lee, MD, of Little Rock, said, ''Over the past six months literally we've had to have compounded at least half of our normal regimen of anesthetic drugs, so that's where not only oral surgeons, but other physicians who administer anesthetics in their office are turning.''
