Cocaine-free topical agents can treat pain caused by torn skin, giving physicians an alternative when suturing skin wounds, according to a Modern Medicine report.
According to the report, the earliest topical anesthetics contained cocaine. The team of researchers, led by Anthony Eidelman, MD, at Olathe Medical Center, examined data from 32 randomized control trials involving 3,128 patients.
According to the report, the research showed that cocaine-free topical anesthetics can reduce pain without triggering side effects. According to Dr. Eidelman, the team could not draw more detailed conclusions because the trial performance methods varied widely.
