The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' anesthesia conversion factor previously announced by the American Society of Anesthesiologists were erroneous, ASA announced this week. The mistake resulted from an error in the original calculations of the CY 2012 Anesthesia Conversion Factor.
CMS is instructing contractors to update all claims processing files to use the updated locale-specific conversion factors. Claims paid using the originally published conversion factors will not be automatically reprocessed.
The updated locale-specific conversion factors are all slightly greater than the originally published figures, according to the ASA. Increases range from $0.08 to $0.13 per unit, or an increase of 0.42 percent to 0.59 percent above the originally posted figures for 2012.
