Anesthesiologist Dr. Gary Fiskum Named University of Maryland Researcher of the Year

Anesthesiologist Gary Fiskum, MD, PhD, was recently named the University of Maryland 2011 Researcher of the Year for his work on the effects of brain injuries, according to a university release.

Dr. Fiskum has spent the last 14 years with his research team at the University of Maryland School of Medicine working with patients with traumatic brain injuries. He and his team have described many molecular mechanisms that can damage the brain and have been able to describe how different levels of harmful free radicals can be produced from oxygen in the cells.

The recent studies, led by Dr. Fiskum, have led to a $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and nearly $4 million in funding from the Department of Defense.
