In Dec. 2011, the American Society of Anesthesiologists submitted a nonbinding letter of intent to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, outlining its intent to apply for a Health Care Innovation Challenge Grant exploring the concept of the perioperative surgical home, according to an ASA release.
The HCI challenge is a pool of $1 billion, with grants ranging from $1 million to $30 million to help individuals develop new ideas to improve care and lower costs for Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP beneficiaries.
The ASA is working to compile a formal grant proposal by Jan. 27 and is actively seeking partners. The ideal partner would have a current surgical home model or near-equivalent in place, would be the lead decision-maker on the project and would agree not to distribute the work-product document outside of the practice.
