Two Florida lawmakers have filed bills that target automotive personal injury protection fraud in an effort to curb fake medical claims, staged automotive accidents and other schemes, according to a South Florida Sun-Sentinel report.
The bills, sponsored by Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff (R-Fort Lauderdale) and Rep. Jim Boyd (R-Bradenton), would require, among other improvements, more detailed police reports that include the names of all passengers. The bills would also ban medical caregivers from billing policyholders directly and offer patients discounts for using insurer-approved clinics.
According to the report, the majority of fraudulent PIP claims are filed by clinics set up specifically to file false claims, rather than by medical providers at hospitals or reputable centers. Critics say the bills could lead to delayed insurer payments and disincentives for providers to accept PIP cases.
