Joseph J. Kubacki, MD, an ophthalmologist from Philadelphia and the former chair of Temple University School of Medicine's ophthalmology department, has been charged with filing false claims, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer news report.
Dr. Kubacki has been accused of filing more than $1.5 million in false claims between 2002 and 2007. Specifically, he allegedly indicated in patient medical charts that he had evaluated multiple patients when, in fact, he had not. In some circumstances, he was not even in town when he purportedly evaluated the patients.
In 2007, Temple University's relationship with Dr. Kubacki ended upon its own internal investigation into Dr. Kubacki's alleged misconduct. Temple University promptly reported its findings to the OIG and is cooperating with the government's investigation. Dr. Kubacki has been working at Emerald Coast Eye Institute in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., since that time.
