Ohio Cardiologist, Five Others Charged for Illegal Distribution of Medication

A cardiologist and five associates from an Ohio-based clinic have been charged with conspiring to unlawfully distribute prescription medications, according to a news release by the Department of Justice.

Brenda Banks, MD, who was employed at Ohio Medical and Pain Management, was charged with allegedly working with five others in selling prescriptions for controlled substances, primarily oxycodone, without a legitimate medical need for it. The indictment claims blank prescription forms were also sold so that buyers could use or resell the prescriptions.

Additionally, the defendants allegedly created fake medical records and prescriptions for those who were not actual customers of the clinic, using Dr. Banks' DEA registration number and fake names to order large quantities of controlled substances.

According to the indictment, proper examination was never performed by the physician and sometimes up to 80 customers would visit the clinic in a single day.
