North Carolina Home Health Company Owners Sentenced to Prison for Medicaid Fraud

Kristie Brake of Jonesville, N.C., and Kimberly Miles of Sparta, N.C., were sentenced to 46 months in prison and ordered to pay $600,000 in restitution for their roles in a Medicaid fraud scheme, according to a report by the Yadkin Ripple.

The two women co-owned Heritage Home Care, where they were charges with submitting 15,000 false claims to Medicaid totaling approximately $600,000 from March 2003 to Jan. 2007.

Heritage Home Care provided personal care services to the elderly and disabled. In North Carolina, these services are only reimbursed by Medicaid if a physician authorizes the services. The two were accused of forging a physician's signature, thereby submitting false claims to Medicaid, as well as billing the program for services not rendered. Ms. Brake and Ms. Miles pleaded guilty to the charges.
