Nine Arrested in California for Medi-Cal Fraud

Nine people were arrested in San Bernardino County for their alleged involvement in a Medi-Cal fraud scheme, according to a news release by Attorney General Edmund G. Brown, Jr.

The suspects were employees and associates of Community Extended Care Hospital of Montclair (Calif.). They were charged with committing Medi-Cal fraud in order to steal assets from the trust accounts of elderly patients. They allegedly submitted claims to Medi-Cal for monthly bills for more than 50 patients in the facility from 2006 to 2009, and then told patients they were required to pay a share of the cost of their care, even though Medi-Cal had paid the claim in full. Payments by the patients were then placed in the patients' trust accounts, and the suspects took money from the accounts, writing checks for amounts between $250 to $6,900.
