A former OR nurse from Garfield, N.J., was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday for stealing $300,000 worth of surgical equipment and supplies from her hospital employer, according to a The Record report.
U.S. District Judge Stanley R. Chesler said a two-year prison sentence was appropriate to deter Angela DeVarso and others like her from committing similar crimes. Ms. DeVarso sold the equipment she stole on the internet at a "remarkable discount," according to the report.
Ms. DeVarso pleaded guilty to a single count of transportation of stolen goods last April. She admitted to taking items such as surgical blades, laparoscopes, a surgical camera, many sterile sutures, staples and vials and selling them on eBay between July 2008 and Oct. 2009.
According to the report, the stolen supplies had a combined value of $302,829.
