Michigan Physician Sentenced to Three Year Imprisonment for False Medicare Claims

Alan Silber, MD, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment and ordered to pay $649,000 in restitution for his participation in a scheme to defraud the Medicare program, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.

Dr. Silber was convicted earlier this year for conspiring with others to submit nearly $1 million in false and fraudulent claims to Medicare for services, specifically injection and infusion therapy services, that were unnecessary or never provided.

Dr. Silber knowingly prescribed medications to patients he knew did not need them because he and the owners of the clinic he worked at believed Medicare would reimburse the medications at a high rate. Court documents and evidence also showed Medicare patients had no medical reason to come to the clinic but were recruited to come in exchange for cash kickbacks.
