Micheline Lamarre, a physical therapist at Premium Care Physical Therapy in Brockton, Mass., and the practice's owner, Patrick J. Gelin, have been convicted of participating in a healthcare fraud scheme and conspiring to commit healthcare fraud, according to a report by the Patriot Ledger.
The two were charged with paying kickbacks to people in return for their filing false accident reports so that the practice could charge insurers for physical therapy services that were never provided. The scheme allegedly began in 2005 and included at least five insurers. The sum of the fraudulent claims were not disclosed, according to the report.
Ms. Lamarre and Mr. Gelin face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each of the eight counts on which they were charged. They will be sentenced on Oct. 14.
