California Internist's License Revoked for Facilitating Healthcare Fraud

A Glendale, Calif., internist's medical license has been revoked by the Medical Board of California for helping another physician commit fraud and lacking remorse for her actions, according to a Glendale News Press report.

Sonia Yacobian, who practiced internal medicine and geriatrics, served a six-month prison sentence after admitting to helping Katrin Saroukhanian defraud a healthcare benefit program and will stay on probation until July 2011.

Ms. Saroukhanian, who owned and operated a Santa Monica, Calif.-based pharmacy, illegally distributed the drug Serostim to a patient. Ms. Yacobian named herself as the prescribing physician in the fraud scheme and said she falsified information to make it appear she had treated the patient numerous times.

The state medical board decided to revoke Ms. Yacobian's license after determining she "refused to accept personal responsibility for her dishonest conduct, nor did she express any remorse," according to the report. Ms. Yacobian appealed the board's decision, which was later denied.
