Texas Medical Board Suspends Physiatrist's License

Uma Rani Gullapalli, MD, a physiatrist from Victoria, Texas, has been suspended by the Texas Medical Board following an investigation that revealed her pain management clinics were not actually owned by her, according to a Texas Medical Board news release.

Texas law only allows the operation of pain management clinics if they are legitimately owned by a physician. However, an investigation of Dr. Gullapalli showed she was paid $20,000 every month by the owner of Winrock Medical Clinic in Houston. Dr. Gullapalli was also said to receive occasional $5,000 bonuses "if business was good," according to the news report.

Dr. Gullapalli also pleaded guilty to charging $200-300 for monthly follow-up visits. In turn for payment, she mailed patients prescriptions. She also allowed two unlicensed employees to examine patients and write prescriptions with her signature already printed on the slips, according to the news report.

In addition to her suspension, the certificates of the two pain management clinics where Dr. Gullapalli worked, including Winrock Medical Clinic, were also suspended.
