Patients Travel Internationally to N.J. Clinic for Calmare Therapy

Patients from Europe, Africa and across the U.S. have traveled to Rutherford (N.J.) Allied Medical Group in the past year for a form of chronic pain treatment that only seven physicians in the country are certified to perform, according to an Asbury Park Press report.

The patients have traveled to the clinic to receive Calmare Therapy, which relieves back and neck pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy, cancer pain and neuropathy.

"We sought to find a new solution for severe chronic pain to help our patients who did not respond to therapy or pain medications," says Floyd Michel, MD, who performs the treatment at Rutherford Allied Medical Group.

The Mayo Clinic, Massey Cancer Institute and the University of Wisconsin are currently conducting clinical trials of Calmare Therapy, and the U.S. military started to provide the therapy to wounded soldiers in hospitals last year.
