Florida officials today confirmed the success of legislation intended to crack down on prescription drug overdoses in the state, according to a News-Press report.
Florida's Drug Enforcement Strike Force Teams, created last year, have since made 2,150 arrests and seized nearly half a million pills, officials said. The number of prescription drug-related deaths also decreased by 18 percent in 2011 compared to the same period in 2010, according to the 2011 Interim Drugs Identified in Deceased Persons Report.
From 2010 to 2011, the number of Florida pain clinics has dropped from 800 to 508. Furthermore, oxycodone purchases by state physicians have decreased by 97 percent in the past year, officials said.
