Commissioners in Flagler County in Florida this week voted unanimously to extend a temporary moratorium on new pain management clinics for an additional six months, according to a News-Journal report.
"We want to curtail any activity such as people coming [to Flagler County] to get pills," said deputy administrator Sally Sherman. The previous moratorium expired May 28, and the extension will last until Dec. 27.
Ms. Sherman said that two state bills have provided assistance in curtailing opioid abuse, but the county wants to continue to monitor the results. Under the bills, manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors are required to report sales and distribution activities to the Florida Department of Health. Physicians and pharmacists are also required to report when prescriptions are both written and filled.
No local businesses have been impacted by the moratorium thus far, according to County Attorney Al Hadeed. "No one has applied, so no one has been denied," he said.
