AAPM Cautions Against Proposal to Limit Dose & Duration of Opioids

American Academy of Pain Medicine responded to a petition submitted to the Food and Drug Administration by the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing that requests label and dosing changes in connection with certain opioid products.

The response expresses concern that adopting PROP's petition to limit the dose and duration of medication as well as modifying the label for opioids prescribed to non-cancerous patients may give a false sense of security to patients and practitioners.

"In our view, a more effective means to address this problem would be enhanced prescriber education and adherence to principles of practice, including ongoing monitoring for aberrant behaviors and early signs of addiction," said AAPM President-Elect Lynn Webster, MD.
